Dr. Joseph P. Loyall is a Senior Technical Director and Principal Scientist at Raytheon BBN Technologies. Dr. Loyall leads the Distributed Systems Group, which currently holds a portfolio of 15 research contracts totaling 25 million dollars funded by DARPA, IARPA, and the US Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL).  Prior to conducting and leading research at BBN, Dr. Loyall was a senior researcher at The Analytic Sciences Corporation (TASC) and a researcher at Texas Instruments.

Dr. Loyall has conducted research and technology development in the areas of quality of service, information management, distributed middleware, distributed real-time embedded systems, adaptive applications, survivable systems, programming languages, design environments, and service-oriented, component-oriented and aspect-oriented programming. Dr. Loyall has been the Principal Investigator on over a dozen research projects funded by DARPA and AFRL. Dr. Loyall currently leads multiple research projects in distributed systems, information management, and fault tolerance, and contributes to additional research projects in adaptive survivability, security, and synthetic biology.

Dr. Loyall has been conducting computer science-related research for over 20 years, since graduating with his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, Illinois. As an undergraduate at Indiana University, Dr. Loyall received his B.S. degree in computer science with high distinction and departmental honors.

Dr. Loyall has published over 100 papers in the areas of distributed systems, quality of service, security and survivability, embedded systems, fault tolerance, software engineering, and other topics. Included in these published papers are over 20 book chapters or journal papers and over 50 conference publications (with the majority of the remainder being workshop papers).

Dr. Loyall is also active in the computer science technical community. He is a Senior member of the IEEE and a member of ACM and AIAA. Dr. Loyall has been a Professional Member of ACM since 1993 (19 years). Dr. Loyall has served on over 50 program committees for over 20 conferences and workshops. Dr. Loyall has served as a reviewer for several journals and has been a reviewer on several National Science Foundation (NSF) grant review panels and a member of the Technical Advisory Group (TAG) for the Software Engineering Institute (SEI). Dr. Loyall also served as the Program Committee co-chair for the International Symposium on Distributed Objects and Applications (DOA) in 2002 and again in 2005.

Dr. Loyall has been an invited speaker or panelist over a dozen times, for conferences, workshops, and before Government committees.

Dr. Loyall holds three patents for his work in quality of service and adaptive middleware.
